There are 5 main ski domains in the valley: Les Houches, Brevent, Flégère, Grand Montets, Balme-Vallorcine (in Le Tour village).
Grand Montets is the nearest, and the highest in the valley, with reliable snow cover starting Christmas and staying open late in spring. Les Houches, which is the home to the famous Kandahar ski race, is the lowest in the valley, and furthest form Argentiére. Brevent/Flégère are two connected regions on the sunny south facing slopes, welcoming and warm even in cold winter days. Balme-Vallorcine, accessible form Le Tour village, is the next closest resort to Argentiére, which has a large choice of runs for each level, and with the beginners La Vormaine area at the bottom provides an excellent place to ski with children and in a mixed level group.
- Les Grands Montets Ski Area – 2 min walk
- The closest area, providing ski touring access to the magic off piste runs. Being the highest in the valley and mostly north oriented it gets the first snow, and closes the latest.
However, at cold periods it may become a chilly and a bit icy.
- There is a smaller Les Chosalets ski area a bit further down the valley, open in plain winter, which is nice for beginners.
- Les Praz - La Flégère Ski Area – 4.2 km
- Easy to get there with the ski bus. South slopes, sunny and nice. However snow may become a little wet if the weather is too hot.
- Domaine de Balme Ski Area – 3 km
- Go to Le Tour by the ski bus. Very friendly area, with a good beginners ski lift La Vormaine at the bottom of the slopes.
- Aiguille du Midi lift – 9 km
- Provides access to the majestic “Valley Blanche”, the mystical high mountain itinerary on the glacier. If you can ski on wild slopes, take a local mountain guide and go there, the views are outstanding. Or just go up to Aiguille du Midi and enjoy the views and panoramic gondola to the Italian side.
